Traveling with Hobbits

Traveling with Hobbits

- Tuesday, October 14, 2025

 1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—
  from where will my help come?
 2 My help comes from the Lord,
  who made heaven and earth.

 3 He will not let your foot be moved;
  he who keeps you will not slumber.
 4 He who keeps Israel
  will neither slumber nor sleep.

 5 The Lord is your keeper;
  the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
 6 The sun shall not strike you by day
  nor the moon by night.

 7 The Lord will keep you from all evil;
  he will keep your life.
 8 The Lord will keep
  your going out and your coming in
  from this time on and forevermore.

~Psalm 121

As we begin our new journeys, it’s easy to look at the most difficult parts to come first. We look to the hills and wonder, “my God, how can I possibly get over this?” We begin our journeys feeling unprepared for what is to come. And maybe we are. Completely unprepared that is.

Being the big geek I am, I think of Frodo from the Lord of the Rings franchise as he is setting out on his journey. Much like almost all of the other less-than-extraordinary hobbits (other than that strange fellow Bilbo) Frodo has spent his whole life in his home of the Shire. In his ignorance to the dangers, he is excited to set off on a journey feeling as though he, much like Bilbo, was called to a life of adventure! But he finds out, very quickly, just how underprepared he his for all of the metaphoric and literal hills he will have to climb on his long walk.

But throughout his quest, he has a fellowship of companions that he finds to lean on. Rarely is he alone in this calling. He is nearly always followed close behind by his companion, Samwise, no matter how difficult the journey becomes. Even as the journey comes to a close, he is not alone.

We aren’t expected to be all knowing or prepared for all of the complications of this life. It’s not possible. We would stress ourselves into the ground in doing so. Instead, we rely on one another and the gifts that we all bring in recognizing that we aren’t doing this journey alone. God has placed ‘Samwises’ in you life that are close behind ready to lift you up. Likewise, you are to be a Samwise to another. For it’s those around us that give us the confidence to say, “I will take the Ring, though I do not know the way.”

Introduction

It’s a miracle! Multiple miracles! The waters of holy baptism have healed us. The body and blood of Jesus in holy communion have made us clean. We have died with Christ and been raised with him. For all this we have returned to offer thanks. From this place we are sent on our way rejoicing to share the good news.

Luke 17:11-19

11 On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he entered a village, ten men with a skin disease approached him. Keeping their distance, 13 they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. 16 He prostrated himself at Jesus’s feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. 17 Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? So where are the other nine? 18 Did none of them return to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”

Please return Directories ASAP

Sorry to have to ask...
For those of you that have picked up your directories, please return them to my office and note on under the returned column that you have returned it.  Sadly, after reviewing them better, they were not printed very well.  They are taking full responsibility for the issue, but are requesting that they be returned before they are willing to reprint them for us.

Again my apologies,

FINAL WEEK TO SIGN UP

Our Funding Forward group is inviting you into the conversation!

We have three brave members of our conversation who are reading Funding Forward and meeting with other churches to explore new ways of doing ministry together. They would like to bring this back to the congregation in a tangible way by inviting you into the conversation. We figured the best way to do this would to meet after church a couple of times a month while reading the book and hearing from the Funding Forward team what they've learned in their trips.

We can place an order for books together with the church. The cost of the book is $26. If you need help getting the book, please let Pastor Joseph know. There are funds available. There will be a sign-up sheet in the narthex.

More about the book can be found here: Funding Forward: A Pathway to More Sustainable Models for Ministry | Augsburg Fortress

October Book Study

This October you are invited to participate in a synod-wide book study of "See Me, Believe Me" by the Rev. Dr. Yolanda Denson-Byers.

Starting October 6, every Monday in October at 12:00pm, connect via Zoom with members of the SCSW Racial Equity Team and SCSW Churchwide voting members for discussion of this important anti-racism resource. "See Me, Believe Me" is being used for book studies around the ELCA. We are delighted to take part alongside our siblings in faith as a way to uphold the commitment to ongoing anti-racism training made at the 2022 SCSW Synod Assembly.

The book study is free to participate in. Participants should plan to borrow or purchase their own copy of the book.

Click the button below to register for the book study. The Zoom link for each study will be emailed to all who have registered through the link below.
