This last Sunday I spoke a bit on spiritual practices and the importance that they have in our lives. During seminary students are required to participate in a class each semester on spiritual practices because it is that important. Monasteries around the world host retreats that are dedicated to different practices and taking time away to sit with the Holy. Spirituality is a big aspect of our overall health and should be given as much attention as you might give your physical, mental, or financial health. For any of those we have pretty good outlines on what it means to be ‘healthy’. It’s not as clear with our spiritual health. But I would say if you find yourself feeling disconnected from God, the Holy, or the world around you, then it might be time to rethink how you are addressing your spiritual health or even getting in touch with a Spiritual Director.
I’ve recently found the need for slowing down in my own life and allowing myself to just exist with who God has made me to be. I’ve tried meditation before, but I always find myself getting too antsy. So, I’ve recently taught myself how to wood carve where I am forced to slow down. I love learning new skills because I must be mindful in all that I’m doing so I don’t mess up. In doing so, I’ve been able to recenter myself and have felt like I can handle more in other areas of my life – or if I need a moment to just breathe, I know what I can do. What ways have you cared for your spiritual health recently?
